Effect of hydrocortisone on Experimental Ear Drum perforation

Abstract
In the clinical experience, tympanic membrane (TM) perforation has many causes and demands various durations of healing depeding on the treatment methods. Almost all perforation are sontaneously
healed, but we experience permanent perforaions in persistent infected cases. Local application of some drug was done in various otologic disease. Steroid was widely used with antibiotics. This study was performed in order to evaluate the effect
of
local application of hydrocortisone in ear drum perforaion.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1) The average closing time of TM perforation in control group was 9.7 days, but steroid group was 17.3 days.
2) In control group, the perforation margin showed cellular hyperplasia and abundant keratin debries, but in steroid group less cellular margin and lack of keratin debries was seen.
3) At stroma, the arrangement of collagen fiber was organized to show parallel pattern to the surface of TM in control group, but the collagen fiber of steroid group showed irregular and loose arrangement.
This study concluded that steroid showed significant effect to delay in wound healing process which showed less abundant keratin material at perforating margin, loose connective tissue layer.
